Just an update... Colin found a hose that was spraying coolant like a fountain, replaced it and solved my missing gallon of coolant a week issue. Thank you Colin!

Cleaning the diff breather stopped the pinon seal leak.

Ac still broken because the weather cooled off and I'm trying not to spend money (just paid $400 in taxes Sad ) I have the clutch/coil it needs, just need it installed and refilled.

Added some ATF and the transmission quit slipping.

Things are looking up! Lol

cylinder #2 is misfiring (or not firing at all i guess??)

pulled the plug wire and there was no change in the idle- all others were noticeable.

swapped plugs/wires and no change on #2.

distributor is good.

compression check?

what else?

was really hoping this would be something easy Sad

if theres no compression on #2, where do i go from here?

Could be a bad injector on that cylinder also.

I have a spare injector I could mail to you to check it if the plugs are the same. I cant remember which year these injectors are from. Im thinking 89+ though.

All four cylinders checked out good with compression... Plugs, wires, distrib. good.

Where do i start with checking injectors? Wiring? (read a lot about loose/corroded wiring in the harness where they are spliced).

Pull em and send them off to be cleaned, rebuilt, tested? Anybody on the east coast do that - i've only seen west coast recommendations...?

I sent mine off to fuelinjectorconnection.com when I rebuilt my engine a few years ago. Pretty quick turnaround since they are in Cumming GA.

lets talk about Colin's truck for a minute.

Its been having a 'hard to start' problem for a good while now, and its freakin' annoying. You have to hold the ignition for several minutes, and it barely sputters to life, sounds like its starved for fuel but you can smell strong gas as it tries to start, if you let off and it dies, then it REALLY doesn't want to start and will run rough for several minutes when it finally does start.

at first we thought it was a battery issue - battery died and was replaced with a new optima last year.

next, thought it might be (and could still be) a fuel issue. since we recently got my injectors cleaned, we pulled his and sent them off, also replaced the fuel pressure regulator (?). had a misfire code and replacing a coil pack made the code go away.

thought that solved it, but days later, same problem.

An old thread on Pirate told me to loosen the gas cap before starting, and that seems to work for the most part - it still sounds 'rough' for a minute after starting though.

What would loosening the gas cap be resolving and whats the right way to fix it?!?! Fuel pump/pressure? vapor lock? (cap doesnt hiss when loosened)

Also, maybe the starter is weak? truck has 270k+ on it and most of the engine components are original!

any ideas would be great.

Has he ever changed the plugs? Mass air flow sensor?

My little truck does something like that when its hot, but once its running it runs fine. I still dont know what the cause is. It only does it when its really hot outside.

have you ever changed the plugs and wires?
i know the wires will "break down" with age and not deliver
strong spark. use genuine toyota wires. have you ever cleaned -replaced the mass air flo meter? might be good and dirty.
that would be my 1st and second things to try.

he's pretty religious about the plugs and wires ... seems like those were replaced within the last year or so (always uses toyota wires). worth a check though...

i'll have him check the maf as well - i do know that the intake and air filter were NASTY when he pulled the injectors. Shock

only thing is, it only does this when its cold, and for the first start after its sitting for a while. Once it warms up and gets running, it is fine Question

well, just an update. the 4runner has been running great lately (cross your fingers it stays that way).

the tacoma sucks when its cold and you need to start it... it seriously takes 5-10 minutes of cranking before it sputters to life. checked compression, things seemed fine; spark is good (plugs/wires), battery is good. you can hear the starter doing its job, and you can smell STRONG raw fuel, but they dang thing just doesnt want to turn over. colin and my dad did the on the truck IAC testing and everything seemed to be functioning as it should. ??

where to go from there? like i said, when its warm, it runs GREAT. but the 30* mornings we've been having lately mean getting up 15 minutes early to make sure the truck starts to get to work on time.
