My build would hardly be included in as an OR but it is a Toyota. It started life as an '89 Uhaul similar to this one:
http://images.craigslist.org/5Nb5M65J93Ke3F33Hbc5cdcf03855c78416e0.jpg

Since January I've been building the box into a camper. The rollup door is removed and replaced by a wall with a normal door and RV escape hatch window. RV windows are cut into the sides. Cabinets, fold down bed and ceiling insulation are in place.

Then...catastrophe hit...I'm 98% sure the usual head gasket issue. Grounded project now. The truck has 240k miles but is still sound.

This brings me to a crossroad, it has a 3L/FI engine:

-R&R heads
-replace engine with one from a salvage yard
-replace engine with rebuilt long block
-replace 3.0L with 3.4L

I full understand the various risks and costs of all my options.

After reading about replacing the 3.0 w/3.4 I'm tempted. Some people have problems integrating the wiring into the older trucks. Gauges and controls are different.

That made a lightbulb go off...maybe it should be dimmed...let me know what you think of this:

Remove the cab and engine, maybe trans too, on the '89 and transplant a whole front end from a truck with a 3.4L

Would the body mounts be the same? If so, which years?

This might be wayyyyy too much work though. I'm capable of the nuts and bolts and have the tools and overhead hoist in my shop to do the lift.

Thanks for any insights,

Tom

If memory serves me, that 3ltr is slightly different than the usual due to cams, I believe that one to be lobed as what is typically referred to as an "rv cam". I would run the numbers, you might have a better set-up than you think.

I would vote 3.4L swap. It pretty much bolts into the 3.0L place. The major issues i remember reading about where the exhaust, and wiring. If you know how to read a wiring diagram you can do it. There are PLENTY of 3.4 swaps running around out there do some Google work and reading. you can find everything you will need.

Thanks for the link to the 3.4 swap. I've read a LOT of swap threads but this one is the best.

I'm still no closer to making a choice.

What about my idea of swapping cabs too?

I think the cab swap would be more involved than it would be worth. I would bet that the cab mounts wouldn't be close. Stick with the same cab and update it with the newer stuff that will bolt up. Such as gauge cluster, seats and what ever else. It's all about how nice and how much time you want to sink into it.

Seats are done...out went the bench seat...and...what's that? Hmmm...some handcuffs!

I put in a pair of '99 Accord buckets. They're a little higher than I wojuld have liked but way better than the bench.

The truck went into the shop last week.

I'm having the head gaskets done. As long as he's 'going in' the water pump and timing belt will be replaced too.

Nite,

Head gaskets, water pump and timing belt. The heads will go to a machine shop for cleanup, etc.

The rest stays as is. No engine swap...is that what you're asking?
