just an update max.
i'm waiting on a call from the machine shop today.
looks like the crank will polish to standard.
one of the two cams will polish to standard.
head pressure tested good.
block pressure tested good.
still waiting to see if the cyls will hone to standard.

you will need a new front cover the one off the re has a bad gruve (sp)
where the timing chain had rubbed it.(almost all the way thru)
the one off the r was pretty badly gruved on the oil pump
surface so i don't want to use that one eather.

if the bores can hone to stock you will still need a set of
pistons. after lookin at em better the ring lands on the top
ring was worn well past reusing them. i'm talking a 30 thou
feeler guage will fit between the ring and land and still have room to move. all 4 second rings were stuck in the lands and broke off
trying to remove. this engine must have been really hot at some time--
the rings were wayyy soft hardly no spring left in em.

thems the only 2 supprises i've got right now (cover and pistons).

i do have pix to show ya the cover and pistons.

i'll let ya know more when i know it.

ok max i heard from the machine shop.
the bores did'nt check out too good.
the bottom of the bores looked good but the top
where the combustion takes place (last 1/2 to 3/4 inch)
showed a lot of wear. so much so that a hone to stock
size was'nt gonna clean it up. you were gonna have to have a set of pistons anyway so the best bet is to go 20 over.

ok so this is what we're lookin at.
rebuild kit that contains
full gasket set with front & rear main seals and seal saver sleeves
pistons rings & wrist pins ( 20 over size)
rods mains & thrust bearings ( standard size)
timing chain with metal backed guides and new tensioner
new timing cover
new oil pump
new freeze plugs (brass)

the machine work includes
hot tank block & head to clean
pressure test block & crank (checked ok)
bore block to 20 over
deck block (just enough to even it out )
polish crank
polish cam
valve job
mill head ( just enough to flatten it out )
check big end & hone rods
align hone main journals

the good news is
the cam and rockers are ok
the crank polished to standard
and the head is useable
this will make you a good engine.

pricing
all parts including gaskets and pistons $300.
machine shop labor $485
for a total of $785.
my labor is covered by the engines you traded me.
you can tip me if you like with shop supplys.

this will be just like a brand new engine when ya get it back.

oh and it will be black too

i'll be needing a deposit pretty soon.
let me know asap.

parts are ready at the machine shop.
i'll pick em up friday.
might get a little done this weekend.
i'll hit it hard starting monday.

assembling an engine is somthing i like to do by myself.
too many distractions with visitors around.
i like having help cleaning parts tho.
if they can do it to my standards.

pee was orange when i went. meds are clearing it up good.

last nite i got the freeze plugs in,the oil pan and
the coolant pipe painted. i tore apart the rocker assembly
---cleaned and reassembled. (that takes awhile)
i got all the threads chased and the block preped. (washed
with hot soapy water)
layed in the crank to measure with plastiguage the
oil clearance. had enough plastiguage to do 3 of 5
main bearings so i had to stop there.
getting more plastiguage today & i'll finish
checking the clearance tonight.

it's coming right along--with luck you can probly get
the engine before tanz 3.

oh and i had gone thru all the bolts--pulled the ones
that i knew where they went--cleaned & bagged em.
oil pan bolts--front cover--oil pump--rear seal retainer
wasen,t as bad as i thought--just spread em out on the table
& go to it. pretty easy cause i still got an assembled re on the
stand to compare em to.

last night i finished checkin the oil clearances.
looked ok. # 4 has a little more clearance than the rest but its within spec.
( remember this crank was polished not turned undersize)
i got the crank and the rear seal retainer installed.
also got the rings on the pistons ready to install.

tonight i'll install the pistons & thats probly all i'll get done today.
(thursday nites i play cards at 6:30)

it's coming along nicely. (slow but nicely)

friday i'll do the timing set and cover--oil pump--oil pan and head.

thursday afternoon i opened the timing set box to find
the kit had one steel backed guide and one plastic.
it was before 5 so i called my supplyer & told em about it.
they said no problem a double steel backed guide kit will
be here by 3 friday afternoon. go to the parts house
friday after 3 open d box and there was one steel and one plastic
guide again. damn there goes the weekend. i would have
been complete had this not taken place.
anyways they have assured me that a dual steel backed
guide kit will be here this afternoon. just a little more pricy.
$89 vs $49.

sorry for the hold up max i had really hoped to be
complete this morning. kinda messed up the whole
weekend. (being it was wet outside & i could work inside).
i still got some stuff done on it tho. cleaned & painted
all the cooling tubing--dipstick tube. cleaned upper intake.
in all i'm ok with where i'm at with it--just wish it was closer
to done for ya.

rotating assembly complete btw.

dont worry when i get my hands on the box
that the correct set comes in i'm saving the
part # for future reference.

i'm amazed at the number of kits that use only
one steel guide. dual steels hard to come by localy.
i could have got just the guides from doa racing
engines for $80. the whole kit i got comes with
gears- chain- guides- tensioner- gaskets and
a oil pump o ring for $89.

well the timing set they assured me had dual steel
rails did not have em. Sad

so the engine is being built with the kit that came
in last week.
one steel one plastic guide.

timing set, front cover, oil pump and head installed.
tonight i'll adjust the valves and install the oil pan.
if all goes well you can pick it up this weekend.

oh yea i need a water pump. the one that was with the parts
you brought me was for a tall (early) block & won't work.
i'll get one & tack it on the bill.

allright max your just about ready to roll.
all i like is installing the injectors-fuel rail-upper
intake-throttle body and motor mounts.

this block had no knock sensor. i think i got a
block with one on it. if it do i'll pull it & install on
your engine.
and we are missing some of the rubber hoses
that go under the intake. do you want me to source
these? i'm sure jimmy can hook us up.

valves adjusted-oil pan on-valve cover on-lower intake
installed.
new plugs-wires-cap & rotor installed.
break in oil-oil and filter installed.

oh i still got to make the egr block offs.
no problem.

you may be able to get this thing this weekend
if all goes well. if not then one day first of the week.

egr block offs done.
upper intake detailed.
motor mounts cleaned.

max we didn't have any motor mounts
in the parts you brought so i went
thru my junk & found a couple.

are you gonna run a power steering pump?
if so i'll go thru my stuff & find a set of
mounts-- clean & install em.

what about an alternator mount?
are you gonna run a chevy one wire
or the stock toyota stuff?

if you run a chevy i need to know what side
of the engine you run it on.
if it's the passenger side i can modify the
stock mount so it don't look so funkey.
(stickin out the way they do)

gimme a call this afternoon.
aint got my phone on me right now.

lookin good.
