Shock Caculation

I was woundering why my steering was hard to one side...come to find out is that the steering is hitting the shock on the driverside....I have a stock 1986 w/ solid axle swap and 3" body lift. I have plenty of room to put longer shock, but I don't know how to set them up...I know how to build a shock loops, but don't know how to set the travel and ride.....CAN SOME ONE HELP...... Question
