hard to type this out as all the old
memorys rush in and cloud my eyes.
freddie was at least 15 years old as we owned him
that long--we don't know how old he was when we first
got him. he had a stroke about a year ago and was blind
and deaf which made caring for him difficult but we had
developed a routine that seemed to work. before i finished the fence he had got lost in the field next
door twice leading to lots of searching to find him.
after the second time he just was not himself anymore.
when we put him out being blind he would just walk in
circles till we would put him back inside. he still did
his business outside (mostly) and would follow the
goats and chickens around sometimes. over the last few
days we could see his condition slowly drop off--he had
quit eating. sunday night anita and i had burned a pile
of brush in the side yard and left a pile of embers about 3x4 feet long overnight. around 6.30 monday morning freddie wanted out so i let him go. i went and took my shower--got dressed and went out to get him back in--he was way down the driveway which was unusual for him. as i rolled up closer i could see his belly, legs and mouth were black. poor old guy had gotten into the burn pile embers burning him pretty badly. so we had to make that long hard ride to the vets office. pause.
freddie chose us to be his masters and i'll never forget the first time i met him. he was a huge part of our lives and we took him with us a lot of places.
he had a good life i think right up till that last day and i feel like i somehow let him down--that's the hardest part right now.
buried him in the edge of the woods in the front yard in a area i had prepped earlier in the year just for him and moondoggie who is 12 years old with failing hips. they will lay side by side overlooking the yard.
evart and bk are doing fine filling in the gaps in our hearts.

new crawler in the works.

Damn Robert, I'm truly sorry. Take comfort knowing you gave him a good, solid, and healthy life!
